Arrivederci — The Italian Connection
Wederom’s history holds a chapter that is as colourful as it is deeply human.
During the Second World War, Italian prisoners of war worked the surrounding farmlands. Among them was Giovanni Salvadori – remembered not for hardship, but for his optimism, creativity, and joy. Together with his fellow prisoner Nanni, Giovanni built a barn that became both his home and his canvas.
On its walls, Giovanni painted a mural depicting daily life at Wederom – the land, the labourers, and himself as the smiling cook. The artwork remains a powerful expression of happiness and resilience.
Today, the restored barn forms part of Wederom’s Prisoners of War Museum and wine-tasting venue, lovingly preserved with the help of renowned artist Jan Corewijn. A tribute to a legend whose memory still lingers on the farm.
